Sheraton Los Americanos Hotel--Palmetto Expressway--Miami Florida--South
elevation
Plan
The 26,000 sf, 10 story structure is clad in Florida limestone and has a
separate VIP entrance on the eastern end
of the building due to a large
corporate clientele and proximity to Miami's
internationally known design district.
The landscape budget was $478,000 and included an irrigation system,
custom
lighting and a charming escape
into a tropical rainforest that doubles as the sites storm water retention
basin. Richard Morganstern Developer.
Sinclair Inc, landscape contractor.

South Elevation

SuperPond or why didn't we think of
this before?
Wetworld's annual top award for a retention lagoon
that became a tropical rainforest complete with Australian tree ferns,
black bamboo, loads of
bougainvillea and
lots more. Close collaboration between the civil engineer and the landscape
architect turned this usually mundane feature into
a tropical fantasy
world that became
a big hit with the guests. Extensive use of aquatic vegetation (pickel
plant, florida lily, lotus, etc) not only looked
great but markedly improved
the filtering efficiency of the
28,000 sf water body. This retention solution was one of the first of it's
kind in florida and led
the way to further research into the evolution of
more creative on site
retention systems in the United States.
The
SEEP (Stormwater Enhanced
Ecological Project) at UFLA ,Gainsville) was but one of many new model
projects that sprang
up during this time period.
